Business Case
Space Situational Awareness (SSA) Application: "Astraeus"

Overview

This project involved the development of a software application, named Astraeus, that offers the following functionalities for managing space objects:
• Visualization: The ability to graphically represent space objects and other SSA information
• Orbital Position Monitoring and Prediction: Tracking current locations and predicting future positions of space objects
• Conjunction Analysis: Assessing and analyzing the potential for collisions between space objects As a foundational tool, this SSA application can serve as a cornerstone application for a rudimentary and continuously evolving Space Surveillance & Tracking (SST) system, enabling it to deliver core SST services.

Software Design

The architecture of the SSA software application was designed with the property of modularity so that it can be extended with new algorithms and SSA services in the future.

Furthermore, the following design decisions were made:
• Backend follows a Microservices-based architecture
• Usage of data from readily available source: Space object catalog is retrieved from Space-Track.org
• Web-based client User Interface (UI)
• Use of own library for accessing the conjunction analysis service (SpaceMap)

Future Expansion

Overflight pass calculations

The ability to compute overflight passes for designated areas, detailing the time of ingress, time of egress, and the total number of passes

Integration with intelligence database

Establishing a connection with an intelligence database to enrich the application with extensive information on space objects

Walkthrough

A walkthrough of the user interface (UI) is provided through the following list of videos covering the use cases of space objects visualization, orbit propagation and conjunction analysis:
